Professional Development
The Dudley-Charlton Regional School District believes that the continuous professional growth of our educators is among the most powerful investments we can make on behalf of our students. We are committed to building a culture of learning that is purposeful, evidence-based, and deeply connected to the work happening in our classrooms and schools every day.
Our approach to professional learning is rooted in the principles of adult learning theory. Research in andragogy — the science of how adults learn — tells us that adult learners are most engaged when learning is self-directed, draws upon their existing knowledge and experience, is immediately applicable to their professional context, and is driven by genuine problems of practice. Building on this, the science of professional learning further affirms that sustained, job-embedded learning — rather than one-time training events — produces meaningful changes in educator practice and, ultimately, in student outcomes. DCRSD designs professional learning experiences that honor these principles by connecting new knowledge to real instructional challenges, providing opportunities for reflection and application, and supporting educators across a cycle of learning over time.
We also recognize that adult learners bring a wealth of expertise and perspective to every professional learning experience. Our educators are not passive recipients of information — they are active contributors, collaborative problem-solvers, and capable leaders of their own professional growth.
A Continuum of Learning Formats
Because no single format meets every learning need, DCRSD offers a rich continuum of professional learning opportunities designed to reach educators where they are and in ways that best support their growth.
Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) serve as the backbone of our ongoing, collaborative work. Through PLCs, educators engage in cycles of inquiry, analyze student data together, examine their practice, and develop shared solutions — building collective efficacy across teams and grade levels.
Outside Expert Presenters bring fresh perspectives, cutting-edge research, and specialized knowledge into our district. Carefully selected to align with our strategic priorities and identified needs, these partners expand our professional horizons and introduce new frameworks for thinking about teaching and learning.
Internal Train-the-Trainer Models leverage the deep expertise that already exists within our own district. By developing and empowering our own educators to lead learning, we build sustainable capacity, strengthen our professional culture, and ensure that knowledge is transferred in contextually meaningful ways by colleagues who understand our community.
Our Learning Library provides educators with flexible, on-demand access to professional resources, curated materials, and learning tools that support self-directed growth. Recognizing that learning happens beyond scheduled sessions, the Learning Library honors educators' autonomy and the varied schedules that define the rhythm of school life.
PD Proposals for Individualized and Group Professional Development reflect our belief that educators themselves are best positioned to identify areas where they want to grow. Through a structured proposal process, individual educators and teams can design and pursue professional learning experiences tailored to their goals — whether that means attending an external conference, completing a course of study, or collaborating with peers on a focused project. This pathway honors teacher voice, encourages innovation, and affirms our commitment to personalized growth.
Our Commitment
Professional learning in the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District is not something done to educators — it is something built with and by them. We are committed to allocating meaningful time and resources for professional growth, to evaluating the impact of our learning investments, and to continuously improving our professional learning systems in service of every student we are privileged to educate.
