When a vacancy on the school committee occurs for any reason, the board of selectmen from the town that member represents and the remaining members of the committee from that town share the responsibility for filling it.

As provided in The Agreement Between the Towns of Charlton and Dudley, the school committee will notify the board of selectmen of the appropriate town that a vacancy has been created within 30 days after it has occurred. After notice has been given by the school committee to the selectmen, the two governing bodies will, acting jointly, appoint a member to serve until the next annual election, at which election a successor shall be elected to serve for the balance of the unexpired term, if any.
